Biosafety training is required for all individuals who work with or around biological materials. EH&S provides UCLA-specific biosafety training covering several topics, and training needs vary based on the biological agents employed and the tasks performed. Laboratory personnel are responsible for completing all required training and maintaining current training certifications.

Individuals who directly handle controlled substances are required to complete the online controlled substance training. Only those who successfully complete the training will be permitted to work with controlled substances. Safety & Compliance
- NEW! Safety Orientation Training
- This course is a requirement for all employees and must be completed every two years to ensure ongoing compliance and awareness of workplace safety practices.
- This course replaces the existing Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and Heat Illness Prevention trainings and provides essential guidance on recognizing workplace hazards, preventing injuries and illnesses, preparing for emergencies, and identifying key safety resources.
The training fulfills key Cal/OSHA requirements, including Injury and Illness Prevention (8 CCR 3203) and Heat Illness Prevention. - You can access the course via the UC Learning Center:

Two types of training are required for individuals working with chemicals:
EH&S-Sponsored training - Individuals working with hazardous materials must complete Laboratory Safety Fundamentals before beginning laboratory activities. Principal Investigators must complete Lab Safety for PI’s and Lab Supervisors upon hire.
Lab-Specific Training - Consult your supervisor regarding training on hazardous activities specific to the work or research you will be conducting.

Individuals who directly handle radioactive material or radiation-producing machines are referred to as occupational radiation workers and are required to complete EH&S radiation safety training.
EH&S provides initial radiation safety training courses that introduce basic radiation safety principles, techniques, and requirements along with supplemental documents containing relevant safety and compliance information.
Users of radioactive materials will be required to take the online course, then attend a classroom session. Only those who successfully complete both parts will be permitted to work with radioactive material.
Users of radiation-producing machines will be required to take the online course,. Only those who successfully pass the course will be permitted to work with radiation-producing machines.
